Internship Coordination

Bridging classroom theory with real-world practice — connecting CU students with meaningful work-based learning experiences.

An internship is a supervised, work-place-based, experiential learning opportunity. It allows students to connect theory learned in the classroom with practical application, explore career paths, develop new skills and make valuable professional connections.

Programmatic Internship

A component of a larger, integrated academic degree programme — such as preceptorship, clinical rotation, or attachment. Academically-directed, supervised by faculty members, and graded based on explicit requirements in the course syllabus.

Voluntary Internship

Undertaken by Level 200 and 300 students — including ATHE Diploma students — whose programme does not require internship, but provides opportunity to be grounded in the reality of work life. Coordinated during long vacation periods (July–October).

CU–ICGC Partnership

ICGC and Central University — one family, one mission: raising whole students in faith, learning and service.

About the Partnership

Central University Ghana is owned by the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC) — a relationship that goes far deeper than governance. The church-university partnership is a vision of shared ministry: assemblies, ministers and members across the ICGC family walking alongside CU students as they grow academically, professionally and spiritually.

Through the Counselling & Career Services Directorate (CCSD), there are three practical ways every assembly can get involved: giving to students in crisis, opening doors to work experience, and partnering in pastoral care.

Support a Student in Crisis

ICGC assemblies, ministers and individual members can give to the CUcare Student Care and Emergency Response Fund — providing bursaries, mental-health emergency support and welfare relief for CU students in need.

Open Your Doors to Our Students

Assembly leaders, professionals and business owners are invited to register as internship host organisations, offering voluntary internship slots (July–October) to Level 200 and 300 CU students, coordinated through CCSD.

Walk with Our Students in Faith

CU and ICGC can collaborate in many areas beyond internship and mentorship. Our students can work alongside congregations to support major events and activities. Contact us to find out more, or to suggest areas of collaboration.

Give to the CUcare Student Care & Emergency Response Fund

The CUcare Fund is CCSD's dedicated welfare pool that provides emergency bursaries, mental‑health crisis support, and relief grants to CU students in genuine need. Funded entirely by the generosity of individuals, churches, and organisations, CUcare ensures that no student has to drop out due to financial hardship or a personal crisis they cannot face alone.

Your assembly can partner with CUcare by making a one-time or recurring donation, mobilising members to give, or designating a tithe/offering to the fund. Every cedi reaches a student directly — no administration fee is deducted from donations.

Start the Conversation

Reach the CCSD partnership desk — we will walk your assembly through any of the three tracks.

🚨
If your student is in immediate crisis

Call 0598 574 577 (CCSD Crisis Line, 24/7) or Campus Security at 0302 218 800. For medical emergencies, call 112. You may also contact the nearest hospital emergency unit. CCSD counsellors are trained to respond to suicidal ideation, severe anxiety, psychotic episodes, domestic situations, and substance-related crises.

Mental Health & Emotional Wellbeing
Warning signs include persistent sadness or hopelessness lasting more than two weeks, withdrawal from friends and activities, significant changes in sleep or appetite, declining academic performance, increased irritability or emotional outbursts, expressions of worthlessness, or any talk of self-harm. If your student says "I wish I wasn't here" or similar, take it seriously and contact CCSD immediately. It is always better to seek help early than to wait until a full crisis develops.
CCSD provides: individual counselling (academic, personal, career, relationship); group therapy circles (anxiety, grief, relationship, identity); crisis counselling and immediate intervention; referrals to clinical psychologists and psychiatrists where needed; peer counsellor programme (trained student peers); mental health awareness workshops and wellness weeks. All services are free and strictly confidential. Students can walk in or book via the CCSD portal.
Yes — all CCSD counselling sessions are strictly confidential under professional ethical standards. Parents cannot access session records without the student's explicit written consent. The only exceptions are if the student poses immediate risk of harm to themselves or others, in which case confidentiality may be broken in consultation with the student where possible. This confidentiality boundary is essential for creating a safe space where students can be honest.
This is one of the most common and difficult situations parents face. Recommendations:

1. Name what you observe without diagnosing — "I've noticed you seem really drained lately. I'm concerned."
2. Don't force — ultimatums often backfire and damage trust.
3. Normalise help-seeking — share examples of people you respect who have used counselling.
4. Remove stigma language — avoid framing counselling as "something is wrong with you."
5. Contact CCSD yourself — we can advise you on how to approach the conversation and can also reach out to the student indirectly through peer support channels.

Some students are more open to talking to a peer counsellor first — this is also an option.
Academic Life
Academic records are shared directly with the student. Parents can request a written consent release form from the Registrar's Office. For general concerns, the student's Faculty Advisor is the first contact. CCSD can assist parents with welfare-related academic concerns (e.g., if a student is missing classes due to mental health reasons) with the student's consent. Contact the Registrar: [email protected]
Central University offers: Academic Counselling through CCSD (study skills, time management, exam anxiety); peer tutoring through the academic offices; lecturer office hours for direct academic help; learning disability assessments (dyslexia, ADHD) through referral; and medical deferral of exams where health is a factor. Encourage your student to speak to their lecturer and CCSD early — the sooner they reach out, the more options are available.
Relationships, Social Life & Safety
University is a season of intense social and relational change — new friendships, romantic interests, peer pressure, and identity exploration. Healthy concern is appropriate; controlling responses are counterproductive. Key principles:

— Stay curious rather than judgmental when they share about their social world.
— Keep communication lines open by being a safe, non-reactive listener.
— If you suspect your child is in a harmful relationship (controlling, abusive), contact CCSD who are trained in this area.
— For concerns about peer pressure or substance use, CCSD offers confidential group support and individual counselling.
Central University has 24/7 campus security patrols, CCTV coverage of key areas, a gated perimeter, and an emergency response protocol. The campus security emergency line is 0302 218 800. Students are advised to travel in groups at night, use campus lighting, and report suspicious activity promptly. CCSD works with security on student welfare incidents. The campus is considered one of the safer university campuses in Greater Accra.
Faith, Values & Spiritual Life
Central University is a Christian institution and faith is integrated across campus life. Chaplaincy services provide spiritual direction, prayer, and pastoral care. Chapel services are held weekly. CCSD's devotional programme (54-week calendar) covers student life, relationships, holiness, purpose, and mental health from a faith perspective. Campus Christian fellowships are active. If your student is struggling with faith questions, the chaplain and CCSD counsellors are trained to engage thoughtfully.
Values exploration is a normal part of young adult development. University exposes students to diverse perspectives, and it is natural for some re-examination to occur. Research shows that students whose parents maintain open, non-reactive conversation about values tend to return to core beliefs more than those whose parents are controlling or dismissive.

Practical advice: Stay connected relationally. Express your values without ultimatums. Ask questions that invite reflection rather than debate. CCSD's chaplain and counsellors work with faith-integrated approaches and are available for both students and concerned parents.
Financial & Practical Independence
CCSD administers the CUcare Fund — emergency grants for students in genuine financial hardship covering medical costs, food insecurity, accommodation emergencies, and loss of income. The Financial Aid Office handles merit scholarships and need-based bursaries. Students can apply for aid through the portal or by visiting CCSD. Contact: [email protected]

For parents: CCSD also offers financial literacy workshops that help students budget and manage their money independently — encourage your student to attend.
Research consistently shows that students who are given appropriate independence — with parents remaining emotionally available but not controlling — perform better academically, are more resilient, and have better mental health outcomes. Practical guidance:

— Let them manage their own schedule and academic calendar.
— Resist the urge to call or message more than once a day.
— Let them experience natural consequences (missed deadline, difficult friendship) before rescuing.
— Be available to listen — not to solve — when they call.
— CCSD is here to provide the professional support your student needs on campus, complementing (not replacing) your parental role.
Career & Post-University Life
The most powerful thing you can do is encourage your student to engage with CCSD early — ideally from Year 1, not Year 4. CCSD provides free career assessments (Holland Code/RIASEC), CV workshops, mock interviews, internship coordination, and employer networking events.

As a parent: share your professional network where genuinely relevant; attend CCSD Career Day events; encourage your student to take internships seriously; avoid pressure to pursue specific careers based on family expectations without exploring fit. CCSD counsellors can help facilitate career conversations between parents and students when needed.
CCSD's support extends 12 months beyond graduation. This includes continued access to job boards and employer connections, career coaching for graduates who haven't found employment, alumni mentorship matching, mental health counselling for graduates (first year), and referrals to external professional associations. Graduates are also automatically entered into the Central University Alumni Network — a growing community of professionals across Ghana and internationally.

University students often need to be heard, not fixed. When your child shares a problem, resist the urge to immediately offer solutions. Ask: "Do you want me to help think through this, or do you just need to talk?" This simple question prevents most parent-student communication breakdowns.

🧠

Normalise Help-Seeking

Students whose parents openly discuss mental health, counselling, and emotional support are significantly more likely to seek help when they need it. Share your own experiences of finding support. Say things like: "I think everyone needs a counsellor at some point." Remove stigma from the equation entirely.

💡

Encourage Resilience Over Rescue

It is tempting to solve every problem your student faces. But allowing them to navigate difficulties — with your emotional support in the background — builds the resilience they will need for the rest of their lives. CCSD's role is to provide professional support on campus; your role is emotional anchor, not problem-solver.

🌍

Respect Their Emerging Identity

University exposes students to diverse people, ideas, and beliefs. Your student will change — in values, interests, friendships, and sometimes faith. This is developmentally healthy. Remain a safe relationship they can share their evolving self with, rather than a judge they must perform for. Trust the values you planted in them.

🙏

Pray With and For Them

If you are a person of faith, prayer is one of the most powerful things you can offer your student. Let them know you are praying specifically for their exams, their friendships, their peace of mind. Offer to pray with them on a call. Faith expressed at home — authentically and warmly — remains one of the strongest influences on students' spiritual lives at university.

⚠️ What tends to push students away

✕ Calling multiple times a day or getting anxious if they don't reply immediately
✕ Comparing them to siblings, cousins, or your own university experience
✕ Making academic performance the primary topic of every conversation
✕ Dismissing their struggles with "in my day, we didn't complain"
✕ Discouraging them from seeking counselling ("we don't talk to strangers about family business")
✕ Threatening to withdraw support during a mental health crisis

Take Care of Yourself Too

Parenting a university student — especially one who is struggling — is emotionally demanding. If you are finding it difficult, CCSD can connect you with resources for parents. The Parent eNewsletter and Key Contacts tab above also keep you informed and connected. Your wellbeing directly affects how present and supportive you can be for your student.
